Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells likely to George G. Starkey, 1875-08-18
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Pauline “Paul” Starkey Wells in Woodside, Ca to “Dear old boy,” very likely her brother George G. Starkey. Paul answers George’s questions regarding the fruit she has been eating, how she is finding Woodside, and whether Uncle Robert has any weapons. He doesn’t have any weapons that she’s seen, but if Geroge were there in California, he could take Dave’s shotgun and hunt the plentiful rabbits and quail all day. Paul believes George could be “as good as pie” if he tried, and she knows he will try. She is sorry he has not been feeling well. Albert Green came down from the mountain this morning. When Green left, he planned to live in a hollowed-out stump, but ended up building a cabin instead. Paul thinks George would like Green and his stories about living in various places- at sea, in “diggings,” in the mountains, the forests, the plains, and in cities. Everyone on the ranch is interested in George’s illustrations. Green identified the tribe of the “Indian” that Geroge drew, but Paul has forgotten it. When they were walking through the woods at Butnot Falls, Uncle Robert wished George could be there to draw them. Paul sends George some money in case it is hot enough for ice cream. Names mentioned: Uncle Robert (Robert Tripp?), Dave / David, Aunt Em (Emeline Skelton Tripp?), Albert Green Places mentioned: W. (Woodside?), Butnot Falls (Butano Falls?)
