Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1875-10-04
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Pauline Starkey Wells in Woodside, CA to her sister, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. Pauline has been very busy picking apples this week because Uncle Robert couldn’t find another man to help Albert Green with the harvest. She has spent quite a bit of time with Green, which he has evidently been enjoying. Pauline writes about Green, “He really behaved beautifully, and if I had not been so well brought up I wouldn’t answer for the consequences.” However Green has advised her not to get married in California, so far away from her family, and only to marry someone for love who is within her station. With Uncle Robert and Aunt Em in ‘Frisco and Addie at school, Pauline is lonely and homesick. She feels she doesn’t have anyone to love the way she loves her friends at home, and old Jack (the dog) is one of her only consolations. She had a letter from their father this week, and she wrote to Louise Kent a few days ago. She asks that the family, especially the little girls, write to her more often as she longs to hear from each of them. Names mentioned: Uncle Robert (Robert Tripp?), (Albert) Green, Aunt Em (Emeline Skelton Tripp?), Addie (Adeline Tripp?), old Jack (dog), Emma Gurth (Genth? Geuth?), Louise Kent Places mentioned: V. (Vineland), ‘Frisco (San Fransico?)
