Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1875-09-25
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Pauline “Paul” Starkey Wells in Woodside, CA to her sister, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. Paul has not been able to practice much because the house walls are very thin, and the noise would annoy people. She reports that Albert (Green) has not made any romantic attempts because he feels he is far below her station. She likes him, but thinks it “would be simply impossible to love him.” She is glad Gertrude doesn’t care for Horace, though she would like to have him as a brother. She notes that three of their friends are now either mothers or will be soon, and she asks Gertrude to write when Lillie has named her baby. She thinks Gertrude will know her opinion of the “Vineland project” by now. She is very glad that Mrs. Parkhurst is going with Gertrude, and she thinks Gertrude is "just the best girl." She imagines Gertrude’s dress is very pretty- Addie has had two dresses made from the same pattern. She was very sorry to hear of Mrs. Kent’s accident and will write to Louise shortly. She asks Gertrude to tell their mother that she has not been very sick; She can still climb to the top of the apple trees and is about to go horseback riding. Names mentioned: Albert (Green), Aunt Em (Emeline Skelton Tripp?), Affa Grey, Horace, Lillie, Hannah, Emma, Mrs. Parkhurst, Addie (Adeline Tripp?), Mrs. Kent, Louise Places mentioned: Vineland, Green Street
