Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells to Theodora Starkey Smith, 1875-08-05
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Pauline “Paul” Starkey Wells in Woodside, CA to her sister, Theodora Starkey Smith. “S” seal pressed into upper lefthand corner. Paul writes about her life on the ranch in California. She has been struggling to upkeep her correspondence with everyone at home and owes several letters. She has made lots of crabapple jelly and next will probably take over the preserves from Aunt Em. Mrs. Dawley, her niece Minnie, and her nephew Willie have stayed for nearly three weeks. Paul was sorry to see the kind man, Albert Green, leave- he has traveled across several continents, worked as a sailor, trapper, and hunter, and with a “good polishing. . . would make as nice a man as anyone need wish to know.” Uncle Robert replaced Green with a “six-foot Maniac” who is familiar with breaking horses. Paul asks Dora to tell their mother that she has more than $15 and that she wrote to Mrs. Hatch some time ago. She has been greatly enjoying the presence of so many cats and dogs and going horseback riding with Minnie. She will write home to 1638 again on Sunday, and she asks Dora to tell her “dear old Boy” not be lazy and to write to her. She wonders why Annie and Lousie went away and how they are getting on without them. She also reports that they plan to travel to Pescadaro next week. Names mentioned: Gertie (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn), Carrie (Cara Starkey Glenn), Aunt Em (Emeline Skelton Tripp?), Mrs. Dawley, Minnie, Willie, Albert Green, Uncle R. (Robert Tripp?), Mrs. Hatch, Annie, Louise Places mentioned: Woodville, San Meteo, CA (San Mateo), Europe, Canada, South America, 1638 (Green Street, Phila.), Pescadaro (Pescadero)
