Letter from Benjamin Fisher Glenn to Mary Aitken Glenn I, 1875-08-24
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Benjamin F. Glenn at 236 South 8th Steet, Philadelphia to his wife, Mary Aitken Glenn I. B. F. Glenn has received a telegram from their son Robert telling him not to come down because the mosquitoes are too bad. He is very sorry to think of them being tortured by the “iniquitous” “long nosed pests” and worries the mosquitos will counterbalance the good effects of the sea air. He recommends they return home early if the “land breeze” prevails and things do not improve. If they choose to stay through Sunday, they should let him know as Mr. Benade will be arriving in Philadelphia on Friday and expecting to go to the shore as planned. Mr. Benade has called a meeting of the Ecclesiastical Council of the Pennsylvania Association at their house next Tuesday, attendance to include Benade, Mr. Burnham, Mr. Tafel, Mr. Pendleton, and Mr. Keyes. Glenn presumes the meeting is in regard to Mr. Pendleton’s ordination. He visited the Pendleton’s last night and found Mr. Pendleton attempting to put their little girl to bed. He suspects the girl may have overheard that he was coming over and wanted to stay up to see the “carpet-bagger.” He found Mrs. Pendleton to be a sensitive and agreeable woman, of youthful appearance with a pretty face, who has been told so much about the Glenn family by her husband that she feels as if she already knows them. The Pendletons will visit the Glenn house Friday night to meet Benade and have him baptize their child. It looks like they will have an interesting and full service on the first Sunday. Glenn believes the Frankfort congregation has called Mr. Jepson of England for one month. He also hears from Mr. Major that they have “fallen quite in love with Mr. Pendleton, and would like to keep him.” He inquires whether Robert sent the Horse Carriage and gives instructions for Robert to see Dr. Duffee’s friend and Mr. Megargee (?) and do his best to sell the cottage. Names mentioned: Rob (Robert Morris Glenn), Mr. Benade, Pennsylvania Association, Mr. Burnham, Mr. Tafel, Mr. (William Frederic) Pendleton, Mr. Keyes, Clara, Mrs. (Mary Young) Pendleton, Mr. Jepson, Mr. Major, Susan, Dr. Duffee, Mr. Megargee (?) (McGeorge?) Places mentioned: Philadelphia, Frankford, England
