Letter from Edith (no surname given) to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1874-12-21
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Edith (no surname given) in Washington, D.C. to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. "First Class" seal pressed into upper left corner. Edith received Gertrude’s letter from her father today. She had intended to stop over in Philadelphia, but business calls her to New York immediately. She hopes to be home when Gertrude arrives. Edith will meet her at the station if she sends a telegram. Edith’s mother will be very glad to see Gertrude; She still cherishes a knitted ball that Gertrude left when she visited as a baby. They should have plenty of room for Gertrude, unless Edith’s mother has turned the house into a hospital in Edith’s absence- “a mania she has and ever will have unless I am with her to crush her charitable but harrowing intentions.” Edith sends her best to Gertrude’s mother and sisters, and reports that she has found Gerturde’s papa “so strongly defended by the Hatch(?)-ways he has surrounded himself with that he has required very little of my care.” Places mentioned: Philadelphia, N. Y. (New York)
