Letter from Edith (no surname given) to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1874-01-22
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Edith (no surname given) at 173 Charles Street, Boston to "Gertie" Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. Edith and her family were glad to receive Gertrude’s letter as it relieved them of anxiety as to her fate. Edith is sorry to hear of Gertrude’s severe cold, and she hopes that rest, quiet, and steady warmth will restore her voice so that she can tell her mother and the children of her time in Boston. Edith regrets to report that Mrs. Brown made an appearance with Andrew Wesber in tow after Gertrude left. Webster asked if Gertrude would like to accompany him and his mother on the train to New York, and he apologized for his abruptness last Sunday. The boys have all now arrived and are driving Edith crazy with their latest novelty- Planchette. Edith’s recent singing performance, at an immense Cathedral in New Bedford, has been receiving complimentary reviews in the papers, and she feels it went unexpectedly well. At home, they are having a hard time dislodging Aunt Nancy from the “rubbish room” and into the room Gertrude just vacated. Edith will always associate this room with Gertrude- “bits of ribbons and flowers and tarleton (tarlatan) ball dresses still exhale their ghostly aroma whenever I enter.” Edith hopes that in twenty years they will find Gertrude “just the same in your fresh trust and belief and faith in everything and your happy sphere which you cast about you & others enjoy.” She sends her love to Pauline and tells Gertrude to inform her that “the Dr.” says he will always keep her supplied with paper dolls. The boys hope to see Gertrude again soon; “Ben says you crushed the hearts of a number of budding Bostonians at the ball, so you must renew your conquests at a not far off period.” Edith also hopes to visit Gertrude in Philadelphia sometime soon.
