Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Walter C. Childs in Paris to John Pitcairn, Jr. W Childs trusts that J Pitcairn has now safely arrived home following his voyage. Childs reports that his trip to Worsley was a success; He stayed for three days, returning to London on Sunday after attending church in Manchester and dining with Mr. Broadfield. Childs found Mr. Warren to be “one of the soundest fellows” despite being surrounded by “a lively lot of radicals.” Before leaving London, Childs secured Pitcairn’s present, a cushioned armchair, which was greatly appreciated by the recipients. Childs bought Rudolph (Tafel) one of their student’s lamps, and he was so pleased that Childs doesn’t think he will ever go back to gas. After sailing across the channel, Childs arrived in Paris and dined with “the boy Couteleau.” Couteleau has bought the 2nd story apartments of the Chateau Le Brun and is refurbishing them in a “gorgeous manner” with attractions including a billiard table, which Childs must exercise caution to avoid. Last Sunday, Couteleau had a “very pretty & coquettish married woman” at breakfast, and when he walked Childs to the door, he whispered in Childs’ ear not to tell Madame Galipaux (?) about it. Childs attended a Sunday service at Dr. Poisson’s conducted by M. Harle. Harle will administer the Holy Supper on Christmas, but Childs doesn’t think he will attend as he doesn’t wish to leave the room. Childs misses Pitcairn, though he still has much to be thankful for because his eyes have been holding up, even allowing him to do some work by lamp light. He has just begun lessons with M. Coutourier (?) at Couteleau’s. He hasn’t begun theater work yet as the play at the Odeon won’t be printed for a few more days. Childs hopes to hear from Pitcairn when convenient, and he wishes him a happy new year. Names mentioned: Mr. Broadfield, Warren, Rudolph (Tafel), Couteleau (Conteleau?), Louis XIV, Le Brun, Madame Galipaux (Yalipaux?), Dr. Poisson, Mr. Harle, M. Coutourier (?) Places mentioned: Queenstown, Worsley, London, Manchester, Paris, Chateau Le Brun, Poland, the Odeon
