Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from William Henry Benade in Allegheny City, PA to John Pitcairn, Jr. Benade has received Pitcairn’s letter of June 29th. With the Professor (R. L. Tafel) as their guide, they can’t help but have a good time, especially as Pitcairn will be able to able to offload some responsibility for M.Z. (Methustikos Zephuros, i.e., Walter C. Childs). If they found “bright inspiration” on the “shores of perfidious Albion,” Benade knows they have met with his friends Mr. Warren and Mr. Potts, “who with Dr. T. form the trine representing the soundness of the English N. Ch.” He inquires whether they have met with the Chandlers yet, and he asks Pitcairn to remember him to Mrs. Bliss. He hopes to join Pitcairn on the next trip, writing, “Perhaps it is better to defer it. A visit to Egypt & Palestine will be far more profitable after some preparation.” He has thought they might organize “Egyptian evenings” when Pitcairn returns- Benade knows of a “splendid series of Egypt views” (photographs) Pitcairn could purchase in London. He also recommends Pitcairn acquire a copy of Bunsen’s “Egypt’s Place in History” at Quarritch in London. The meeting of the Ministers’ Conference in Bath, Me. was a great success. Benade feels they have established it as the main annual meeting of the New Church. Next week he will visit Mr. P. W. Chandler in Maine and then meet with the editorial sub-committee of the Liturgy Commission in New York. He expects the arrival of Mr. De Charms in a few days now that he has been able to secure a room for him by applying to Artemas (Pitcairn) for some money from a fund J Pitcairn left with him. Society matters are progressing favorably. They have had more visitors recently due to the closing up of other places. He notes that pestilence has spread following the flood, especially amongst the children who remained in the ruined district. He sends love to all and writes that he has enclosed a word for Walter.
