Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from William Henry Benade in Allegheny City to John Pitcairn, Jr. Benade tells Pitcairn they are all concerned for his health; Frank has reported that he is working too hard and injuring himself. They missed Pitcairn at the Association meeting, which Benade feels has been pleasant and profitable. At Saturday’s business meeting, they discussed establishing a permanent fund for the Association by recommending a minimum annual contribution of $1 per member. Mr. Sewall (?), visiting from Urbana, preached for them on Sunday, and they had larger attendance at Holy Supper than ever before. In the evening, Dr. Burnham gave an excellent extemporaneous discourse on the doctrine of the Lord. Frank has sent for the Dr.’s diagrams, and they will have a prolonged explanation on degrees. Mr. (?) Mills, now living in St. Louis, was also present and “afforded sufficient antagonistic material to make our social gathering quite lively.” Next week, Benade and Dr. Burnham will attend a meeting of the Commission on the Liturgy in Glendale. When Pitcairn returns, Benade believes he will find them all pleasantly situated in their new place. Benade sends love and reminds Pitcairn to be moderate in his studies. Names mentioned: Frank (Frank Ballou?), Association (Pennsylvania Association), Mr. Sewall (?) (Rev. Frank Sewall?). Dr. (N. C.) Burnham, Mr. (?) Mills, Commission on the Liturgy Places mentioned: Urbana, St. Louis, Glendale
