Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Leonard Tafel New Brighton, NY to John Pitcairn, Jr. L Tafel hopes for a visit from J Pitcairn and their friend Child, however, due to a downturn in business prospects, he fears Pitcairn may be prevented from coming. The year has treated Tafel “liberally”- five grandchildren have been born, and a great grandchild is on the way. His German translation of the New Testament has begun printing in Switzerland, and he recently received from Germany the first proof sheets of the third part of his English-Hebrew Interlinear. He wishes Pitcairn could have been in New York to attend the assembly of the Evangelical Alliance. Tafel is now working on a New Church response to an antichristian article which came out directly after the assembly, attacking the divinity of the Bible. He has been approached by a Baptist pastor and editor of the Volksfreund newspaper who wants Talef’s article for the paper. There is a Catholic in the Tribune who is of the opinion that Protestantism will collapse and fall back into Catholicism, which Tafel thinks would be an improvement since the Catholics are about to return to the creed of the early Christians. Names mentioned: Child (Walter C. Childs), Evangelical Alliance, Staats Zeitung (newspaper), Volksfreund (newspaper), Tribune Places mentioned: Philadelphia, Brooklyn, New Brighton, Cincinnati, Washington, Switzerland, Germany
