Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Caira Skelton Starkey, 1871-06-22
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Philadelphia to his wife, Caira Skelton Starkey. G. R. Starkey, M. D. letterhead. G Starkey received C Starkey’s letter last night but was too tired to answer. In case she hasn’t received his letter of last Thursday, he will recapitulate its contents: C Starkey should remain where she is until she wears out her welcome, be in Boston on the 4th, if disposed, visit Bridg- (?) and elsewhere, and then return home during the second week of July. G Starkey encloses $10 and will send a P.O. order to Lex (Lexington?). C Starkey is greatly missed and the emptiness in the house grows larger every day. G Starkey has been very busy; He was forced to take on a patient in Camden, and this takes about three hours of his time every day. Alice Bonett and Mamie Kent stayed two nights and then accompanied them to yesterday’s picnic where they had a long-to-be-remembered good time. Cara and Dora have now gone home with Mamie for a visit. Jamie sends loving and respectful greetings. G Starkey noted a “sphere of sadness” in C Starkey’s last letter. He is sorry she feels “little vigor of body and voice,” but he thinks she will recover it soon. He asks her to thank Ned for his letter and to send his love to all the folks. They are getting along without her but will be very happy to see her when she gets home. Names mentioned: “Gertie” (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn), Alice Bonett (Banett?), Mamie Kent, Cara (Starkey Glenn), Dora (Theodora Starkey Smith), Jamie, Ned Places mentioned: Boston, Lex (Lexington?), Bridg- (Bridgeport? Bridgewater? Bridgton?)
