Letter from Robert M. Glenn to Mary Aitken Glenn I, 1870-07-17
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Robert M. Glenn at Hotel Mirabeau, Paris to his mother, Mary Aitken Glenn (1819-1896). R Glenn has been greatly enjoying Paris. He describes buildings decorated with busts and carved flower garlands, and streets so smooth and level that riding over them feels like being on velvet carpet. The cabs are very cheap, so he and Ernest have been sightseeing around the city every day. He tells his mother not to worry too much about the war; They wouldn’t even know it existed if it weren’t for the newspapers. He sends his love home, and he hopes his mother’s back has recovered. The latter part of the letter is dated July 19th. They have now arrived back in London, at the Golden Cross Hotel. They took a hansom ride in the morning to Westminster Abbey, where Glenn was very impressed by the tombs of great men and women from history. He describes in detail the tomb of Lady Nightengale, which includes a monument depicting Lady Nightengale dying in her husband’s arms while he tries to ward off Death. Names mentioned: Ernest (no surname given), Lady Nightengale Places mentioned: Garden of Plants, Paris, London, Golden Cross Hotel, Hyde Park, Westminster Abbey
