Letter from Robert M. Glenn to Benjamin F. Glenn and Mary A. Glenn I, 1870-07-20
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Robert M. Glenn at the Golden Hotel, London, to his parents Benjamin F. Glenn and Mary Aitken Glenn. R Glenn recounts his visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The outside was dingy and almost black from smoke. The inside was better but not very grand. Glenn notes the stained glass, 300 ft high dome, the statuary, and the very good boys’ choir. After the service, they went down into the crypt and saw the tomb of the Duke of Wellington, complete with his coronet, clothes, and funeral car pulled by 3 wooden horses and decorated with captured guns, black velvet, and silver. They chose not to go up into the ball because there was nothing to see and it cost too much money. While the thermometer has reached 105 in the shade at home, R Glenn has been enjoying temperatures of 75-85. However, the city is quite dirty; Even as he writes, pieces of soft coal keep floating in through the window and settling on his letter. He sends his love and hopes everyone at home will keep cool. He and Ernest are quite well. They have been far and seen much. Names mentioned: Duke of Wellington, Ernest (no surname given) Placed mentioned: St. Paul’s Cathedral
